ACCIONA Energía has commenced supplying renewable energy from its Logrosan biomass plant located in Caceres, Spain, to the grid.

The plant has a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) and is expected to produce 380 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity per year, avoiding more than 187,000 tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

This carbon reduction is equivalent to taking 60,000 conventional cars off the road or planting 9,000 trees.

The facility is projected to consume 275,000 metric tonnes (mt) of biomass each year, primarily derived from forestry residues.

Collecting this material will promote active forest management in the area, lowering fuel loads and thereby decreasing wildfire risk and intensity.

ACCIONA Energía won the contract from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to build, operate, and maintain the Logrosán biomass plant.

The project was awarded in the third auction under the renewable energy economic regime, which guarantees a fixed electricity sale price for 20 years.

The Logrosan facility generated over 400 construction jobs and will maintain about 30 permanent roles for operations and maintenance.

More than 900 contractors and small and medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) from agroforestry and transport are expected to be involved across the value chain.

Approximately 200 direct positions are dedicated to collecting prunings, scrubland material, and forestry residues, effectively providing the equivalent of 200 year-round “forest firefighters” focused on land management and wildfire prevention in the area.

The Logrosan biomass project delivers broad economic benefits locally, with roughly one-third of the plant’s revenue flowing back into the region through services, hiring, and procurement.

Earlier this month, ACCIONA Energía started commercial operations at its 480MWp Aldoga solar farm, located in Queensland, Australia.
