ACCIONA Energía has commenced commercial operations at the Forty Mile wind farm in Alberta, Canada.

The 280MW facility is one of Canada’s ten largest wind farms and marks the largest wind farm ACCIONA Energía has constructed in North America.

Equipped with 49 Nordex turbines, each having 5.7MW capacity and a 108m tower height, it is set to reduce CO₂ emissions by 600,000mt annually – comparable to the environmental benefit of planting 25 million trees.

During its construction phase, the wind farm generated 200 direct jobs. It will continue to support 25 full-time positions for operations and maintenance.

Local economies will further benefit from the wind farm, with projections indicating more than C€85m in property tax revenues throughout its operational lifespan.

These funds will support public services and enhance the quality of life in local communities.

ACCIONA Energía has shown its commitment to social responsibility by providing financial assistance to non-profit organisations such as the Bow Island Food Bank, the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub, and the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.

With a two-decade presence in North America, ACCIONA Energía has established a significant renewable energy portfolio in the region. It has an installed capacity of 3.45GW across solar, concentrated solar power, wind and battery energy storage systems (BESS) technologies.

In April 2025, BHP announced a collaboration with ACCIONA Energía to explore the feasibility of a pumped hydro energy storage project at the Mt Arthur Coal mine in New South Wales, Australia.

This initiative is in line with BHP’s strategy to responsibly manage the mine’s closure by 2030, coinciding with the end of its economic viability.
