Nordic solar developer and independent power producer Alight and AkzoNobel, a supplier of innovative paints and coatings, have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to build a 15 megawatts peak (MWp) solar park in Uppsala County, Sweden.
The solar facility will be financed, constructed, owned and operated by Alight.
AkzoNobel will secure a portion of the clean electricity generated from the solar park at stable, low prices to supply its adhesives site located in Kristinehamn and its protective coatings plant in Gothenburg.
Once operational in 2027, the solar park is projected to produce 16 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually, meeting the electricity needs of approximately 3,200 households based on average consumption of 5000 kilowatt hours per household.
Alight head of PPAs Johan Hernström stated: “We’re extremely proud to work with AkzoNobel, one of the world’s most sustainable paints and coatings companies. We applaud them for taking bold steps to contribute to the energy transition.”
The initiative supports AkzoNobel’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and aligns with Alight’s mission to eliminate carbon from the grid.

By GlobalDataAkzoNobel is also exploring an offsite opportunity for its Malmö site, which is located in a different energy zone, and planning for another PPA in Germany.
AkzoNobel director of sustainability Wijnand Bruinsma stated: “Partnering with Alight, a trusted and experienced solar developer, is an important step in our journey to achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2030.
“We already operate on 100% renewable electricity at all our manufacturing locations in Europe (excluding Türkiye) and teaming up with Alight will secure a supply of clean, reliable energy for most of our operations in Sweden. It will also add renewable energy capacity to the Swedish grid, contributing to the nation’s clean energy transition.”
In a related development, in April 2025 Alight entered a PPA with automotive safety supplier Autoliv to supply the majority of the clean electricity generated by the 100MWp Alight solar park in Eurajoki, Finland, which is anticipated to commence operations in 2026.
