ARC Clean Technology (ARC) and Nucleon Energy (Nucleon) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the implementation of the ARC-100 advanced small modular reactor.

This initiative will concentrate on combined heat and power (CHP) as well as electric-only generation sites being developed by Nucleon in Alberta, Canada, and Texas, US.

The agreement signifies a significant progression in ARC’s strategy for commercial rollout in North America.

It aligns with Nucleon’s ambitions to create clean energy facilities aimed at reducing carbon emissions in heavy industry and improving regional power grids.

Under the MOU, both companies will work together to evaluate potential locations for the ARC-100.

The initial phase will involve incorporating the ARC-100 into Nucleon’s current development projects for power generation, followed by steps towards obtaining regulatory approval in both Canada and the US.

ARC Clean Technology chief operating officer Robert Braun said: “We are very pleased to be working with Nucleon, a dynamic developer of energy infrastructure projects in Canada and the US.

“This agreement advances our goal of identifying highly strategic partners and sites where the ARC-100’s flexible, low-carbon energy solution can support industrial applications and reliable grid power.”

The ARC-100 is a 100MW Generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor, designed for generating electricity and providing industrial heat.

It is particularly well-suited for initiatives focused on reducing carbon emissions in sectors such as oil and gas, refining, chemicals and manufacturing.

This technology is being advanced in collaboration with New Brunswick Power at its Point Lepreau site in New Brunswick, Canada.

In 2023, NB Power submitted an application to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for a licence to prepare site for a commercial demonstration of the ARC reactor.

The MOU establishes a foundation for a potential long-term commercial alliance between the two companies, with the prospect of deploying multiple ARC-100 units throughout North America.

Nucleon Energy president and CEO Dustin Wilkes said: “This partnership reflects Nucleon’s commitment to building clean, dispatchable energy systems that meet the dual needs of power reliability and emissions reduction.

“SMRs are an important part of that future, and we are excited to begin this collaboration with ARC Clean Technology.”
