Avangrid, part of the Iberdrola Group, has signed a contract with SmartestEnergy for power from two energy projects in the US state of New Hampshire.  

It marks the first offtake agreement between the two companies, with SmartestEnergy receiving the full capacity from Avangrid’s Lempster and Groton projects, totalling 72MW.

Lempster, a 24MW wind project in Sullivan County, became New Hampshire’s first commercial-scale wind farm in 2008.  

Groton, a 48MW wind project in Grafton County, went online in 2012.  

Together, these projects support ten permanent jobs for operations and maintenance while contributing to state and local taxes. 

In 2024, the Lempster and Groton projects contributed $1.8m in taxes, and they have contributed $30m since their inception.

Avangrid operates in 23 states with 10.5GW of power capacity across 80 projects, showcasing its extensive reach in the energy sector. 

Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda stated: “We are happy to partner with SmartestEnergy for power from these two energy projects in New Hampshire. At a time when demand for power is growing rapidly, this demonstrates our proactive approach to managing Avangrid’s existing fleet of energy projects to ensure they continue to benefit the community through their lifetime and generate reliable electricity for homes and businesses in the Northeast.”

Securing the full offtake from these long-standing New Hampshire wind assets demonstrates the trust and commitment Avangrid has in SmartestEnergy to provide a reliable and competitive route to market for their wind assets.

In July 2025, Iberdrola and Masdar secured £3.6bn ($4.87bn) in financing for the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm offshore Suffolk in the UK.  

This 1.4GW project, one of the largest offshore wind farms, will be operational by Q4 2026. 

East Anglia THREE will generate clean power for 1.3 million UK homes, support 2,300 construction jobs and maintain 100 long-term positions.  

The funding will cover part of the project’s estimated €5.2bn cost.
