BP has signed agreements for the supply of renewable energy to the European data centres that drive the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform.
The company will start the delivery of renewable energy from more than 170MW of newly built wind and solar projects located in Sweden and Spain to AWS. BP state that these agreements are in line with its growing sustainable power business. The renewable energy produced will be sufficient to supply more than 125,000 European homes each year.

BP’s sustainable power business includes agreements within the corporate sector. The expectation is expected to grow the company’s relationship with AWS to more than double the capacity in excess of 400MW.
As part of the project, BP will initially supply 122MW of new renewable power capacity to AWS from its onshore windfarm which is being built in Västernorrland, Sweden. Operations at the wind farm are expected to start in 2022.
The agreement will also be supported by a new solar farm in Spain, which is expected to deliver 50MW to AWS beginning 2021.
BP Supply and Trading Global Gas chief operating officer Robert Lawson said: “BP and AWS are both targeting reductions in emissions from their respective operations.

BP noted that the expansion of its corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) business will enable it to focus on improving its products and services to help customers reduce their emissions.
