Energy services company Centrica has announced life extensions for two UK nuclear power stations, Heysham 1 and Hartlepool, in which it holds a 20% interest.

These extensions will allow the stations to continue generating electricity until March 2028, providing greater energy security for the region, according to the company.

The two power stations are now set to operate for an additional year beyond their previously expected shutdown.

This development is part of the UK’s strategy to secure a clean and reliable energy supply, as these stations collectively power over four million homes annually with low-carbon electricity, said Centrica.

Centrica CEO Chris O’Shea said: “The UK needs more reliable, affordable, zero-carbon electricity, so the extension of Heysham 1 and Hartlepool is great news. We believe in having a diversified energy system, with nuclear power playing a key role in ensuring stability and sustainability for decades to come.

“Our longstanding involvement in the UK nuclear industry is an investment in Britain’s energy independence and thousands of high-quality jobs. Our recent investments in Sizewell C and the Isle of Grain LNG Terminal further underscores our commitment to securing the UK’s energy future through a range of low-carbon technologies.”

Since December 2024, the life extensions of the UK’s nuclear power stations have been projected to contribute an additional 12TWh to Centrica’s electricity generation volumes between 2026 and 2030. The latest extensions account for 3TWh of this increase.

These extensions follow Centrica’s strategic investment in Sizewell C. The new 3.2GW nuclear power station, located in Suffolk, represents a £1.3bn ($1.7bn) commitment from Centrica.

Centrica holds a 15% equity stake in Sizewell C, which is expected to deliver zero-carbon base load power for at least 60 years after commissioning.

This July, the UK’s energy secretary signed the final investment decision for Sizewell C, making the government the project’s single largest equity shareholder with an initial 44.9% stake.
