Synera Renewable Energy Group (SRE Group) has awarded a 15-year service operations vessel (SOV) contract to Dong Fang Offshore (DFO) to assist with the operations and maintenance (O&M) of its asset fleet, beginning with its Formosa 4 offshore wind project.
It is claimed to be the longest such contract within Taiwan’s offshore wind sector.
Between 18km and d20km offshore Miaoli County, Formosa 4 is a major initiative developed and financed by SRE, and symbolises SRE’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy footprint in Taiwan.
With a maximum capacity of 1,104MW, it represents a significant achievement as the first Taiwanese offshore wind project to be entirely developed by a local team since the country began commercialising offshore wind energy.
The wind farm features a jacket foundation and will consist of 35 turbines, situated in water depths ranging between 57m and 64m, across 58km².
SRE chairperson Lucas Lin stated: “SRE has consistently fostered trusted local partnerships for our offshore wind projects. Our collaboration with DFO has been marked by mutual goodwill, ultimately enabling this significant long-term commitment to Taiwan’s offshore wind market. We look forward to this strong partnership delivering reliable power and setting a model for sustainable industry development.”

By GlobalDataThe newly formed partnership involves DFO providing a custom-built, Taiwan-flagged SOV that will support Formosa 4 from its construction phase.
The vessel is designed to withstand Taiwan’s unique maritime conditions and will be constructed according to the highest European standards, aligning with SRE’s stringent operational demands.
The partnership will enhance the local supply chain and foster sustainable growth in the offshore wind industry in Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region.
Formosa secured a substantial capacity of 495MW during phase three zonal development’s first auction round, conducted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in late 2022. The company achieved an establishment permit by late 2024.
This accomplishment positions Formosa 4 as the frontrunner among the projects awarded in the initial auction phase.
DFO CEO Polin Chen stated: “We appreciate SRE’s trust and confidence in DFO and are pleased to support the Formosa 4 project’s O&M through this 15-year partnership. With this long-term commitment, we look forward to working together to advance the localisation of O&M services for Taiwan’s offshore wind industry.”
In May 2025, SRE raised its stake in the Formosa 2 offshore wind farm 26%, securing a majority controlling interest of 51%.
