Dominion Energy Virginia has notified the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) about its plan to renew operating licenses of the North Anna Power Station for an additional period of 20 years.
The company is expecting to file the renewal application in 2020.

The nuclear power plant (NPP) facility is currently generating around 1,892MW of electricity, which is enough to power 473,000 homes.
Dominion Energy nuclear generation division chief nuclear officer Daniel Stoddard said: “Renewing North Anna Power Station’s licenses for a second 20-year period is the right thing to do for our customers, the regional economy and the environment.”
In November 2015, Dominion Energy Virginia informed the NRC that it would file a similar application to renew a license for two units of Surry Power Station by 2019.
Situated in Surry County, this NPP generates around 1,676MW electricity.

Dominion Energy is currently reviewing all technical aspects associated with the renewal of North Anna plant’s licenses.
Under the relicensing process, the company also plans to invest up to $4bn to upgrade the two NPPs.
