Duke Energy Renewables has started commercial operations at its 200MW Mesteño Wind power project located in Starr County, Texas, US.

The wind facility is equipped with 590.5ft-tall wind turbines that are supplied by Vestas. For the project, the company supplied 56 3.6MW turbines.

Duke Energy Renewables president Rob Caldwell said: “We are excited to bring another wind project online in Texas and plan to continue investing in renewable energy in the state. This project will deliver clean energy and significant economic benefits.”

The company expects that the tall design of the wind turbines would harness stronger winds, increasing wind energy production.

Mesteño will be Duke Energy’s fourth wind generation facility in Starr County and 11th in Texas. It will have enough power generating capacity to fulfil the electricity demands of approximately 60,000 average homes in the region.

The clean energy generated by the facility will be sold in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market.

The company has also entered a long-term hedge agreement, which covers the majority of the electricity generated by the facility.

During the peak construction period, the project has created approximately 200 employment opportunities in the region and is expected to generate more than $16m in tax revenue over the first ten years of the operation.

Vestas US and Canada sales and service division president Chris Brown said: “We are pleased to expand our tall tower technology and V136-3.6MW platform.

“The combination of taller towers and V136-3.6MW technology is perfectly designed to extract the abundant resource at the site and deliver low-cost, reliable energy to the community and customer.”

For the project, Amshore US Wind provided development support, while Wanzek Construction served as the contractor.
