Wind turbine manufacturer Envision Energy and mining company Fortescue have entered a 132MW turbine supply agreement for the latter’s inaugural large-scale wind project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia (WA).
The agreement will see Envision assist Fortescue in eliminating fossil fuel usage and achieving “Real Zero” terrestrial emissions (Scope 1 and 2: direct emissions from sources it owns or controls, and emissions as a consequence of its activities but from sources it does not own or control) across its iron ore operations by 2030.

This initiative is a component of the global alliance Fortescue has unveiled to speed up industrial decarbonisation and develop cost-effective clean energy systems that can surpass fossil fuels.
It was announced at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
As part of this alliance, Fortescue has selected Envision Energy, a provider of green technology, as its strategic partner for wind and energy storage.
Envision will provide its EN182-7.8MW turbine due to its efficiency and versatility. These will be coupled with 188-meter (m) Nabralift steel towers, the tallest in the world.

Envision Energy international product line senior vice-president and president Kane Xu stated: “The challenge of climate change is global, but Australia’s energy transition can lead by example.
“Australia’s abundant wind and solar resources, combined with cross-border collaboration and advanced technology, can create resilient, low-cost energy systems capable of fully replacing fossil fuels in industrial operations.
“Our partnership with Fortescue is set to deliver substantial advancements in renewable energy infrastructure, demonstrating how innovation and engineering can reshape the future of energy in hard-to-abate sectors, and setting new benchmarks toward a Real Zero future.”
Fortescue Metals and Operations CEO Dino Otranto stated: “The Pilbara has some of the best wind and solar resources in the world. We’re harnessing these to power our operations with renewables – cutting emissions while building an energy system that is reliable and efficient for the long term.
“By combining Envision’s world-leading wind turbine technology with Nabrawind’s innovative tower design, we can deliver large-scale renewable energy projects that help us move away from fossil fuels.”
In its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, Fortescue intends to deploy 2-3GW of wind and solar energy production, complemented by extensive battery storage systems.
The renewable power will be connected to Fortescue’s electrical network via transmission links.
