The European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy (ITRE) has agreed to reduce power consumption across EU countries by 40%.
Each member of the EU will be required to set its own national energy-efficiency targets to achieve the cuts by 2030.

ITRE has also agreed that EU countries will include at least 35% of renewable energy in their respective shares of total energy consumption.
EU renewables rapporteur José Blanco Lopez said: “Europe needs to do more, Europe needs more ambition in renewables to meet the Paris commitments, combat climate change, and lead the energy transition.
“The Industry and Energy Committee, through a very broad majority, defends raising the binding target for renewables at EU level from 27% to 35%, to enshrine self-consumption as a right, to give security and certainty to investors, and to increase the ambition in the decarbonisation of transport and heating and cooling sectors.”
Members of the European Parliament (MEP) have also revised legislative proposals to ensure that consumers who use self-produced energy can consume it and install storage systems without paying any charges, fees, or taxes.

By GlobalDataMEPs have also asked member states to evaluate existing barriers that restrain consumers from consuming energy produced on their own premises.
In addition, the MEPs also expressed their interest to assist people to establish renewable energy co-operatives in their communities to jointly install solar panels, wind turbines or hydroelectric power solutions.
