First Solar is set to commence construction of a 200MW photovoltaic (PV) solarpower plant in Twiggs County, Georgia, US.
The firm was awarded the installation work as part of a 525MW Request for Proposals for Georgia Power’s Renewable Energy Development Initiative (REDI).

First Solar Americas project development vice-president Kathryn Arbeit said: “This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for First Solar to demonstrate our capability to develop solar assets in the Southeast and help Georgia Power meet the renewable energy needs of its customers.
“Georgia Power’s significant commitment to renewable energy, paired with Twiggs County’s strong leadership and supportive business environment, combine to serve as a great example of how solar can be seamlessly included in the region’s energy mix.”
Construction of the plant is expected to begin in November, while completion and commissioning are expected by late 2019.
Georgia Power’s director of renewable development Wilson Mallard said: “We are committed to working with the Georgia Public Service Commission to create programmes such as REDI that help grow renewable energy in Georgia and add value for all of our customers.

The solar project will be constructed across 2,000 acres of land near Warner Robins. It will use more than half a million advanced thin-film solar modules to produce around 450GWh of power annually.
Construction of the plant will create 300 to 400 jobs.
