Dutch Geo-data company Fugro has signed a seven-year framework agreement with Ireland’s transmission system operator EirGrid to conduct geo-data surveys for Ireland’s Powering Up Offshore – South Coast project.

Fugro will conduct a comprehensive range of geo-data surveys, encompassing desktop studies, geophysical, environmental and geotechnical assessments.

The Powering Up Offshore – South Coast project aims to develop offshore electricity substations and export cable routes, facilitating the connection of future offshore wind farms on Ireland’s south coast to the national grid.

Fugro’s geo-data insights will play a crucial role in identifying optimal routes and engineering designs, which will help reduce project risks and ensure safe and efficient development.

The integrated ground model will provide EirGrid with a detailed understanding of subsurface conditions, aiding in the installation of transmission infrastructure while protecting Ireland’s marine ecosystem.

The surveys, commencing in July 2025, will begin with geophysical and environmental assessments. All data will be delivered via Fugro’s cloud-based platform, VirGeo, and the surveys are expected to conclude by September 2025.

Fugro has highlighted the complexity of the project area, which spans four geographical zones: onshore, intertidal, nearshore and offshore. The Fugro Seeker and Kommander Iona vessels, along with jack-up barges, will be utilised for these activities.

Fugro has engaged Irish suppliers to provide essential services, including metocean data collection and aerial drone surveys.

The project aligns with the Irish government’s climate action plan, which aims to expand the country’s renewable energy capacity to 80%, including at least 5GW of offshore wind energy.

EirGrid chief transformation and technology officer Liam Ryan stated: “These surveys are key for assessing seabed conditions, soil properties and environmental impacts across the landfall, intertidal, nearshore and offshore zones related to cable corridors for the project.

“The insights gained as a result of this work will play a key role in informing plans for the installation of the transmission infrastructure for offshore wind energy and will guide how EirGrid progresses the project in a way that is best for our marine ecosystem and local communities.”
