GE Power has secured a contract to supply turbine island equipment for the El Dabaa nuclear power plant project in Egypt through AAEM, its joint venture (JV) with Atomenergomash.

Under the terms of the contract, GE Power will deliver the design of four basic conventional islands and supply four nuclear turbine generator sets, including the Arabelle half-speed steam turbines.

“The plant has been designed to generate 4.8GW of energy, enough to power more than four million homes in the region.”

The company will also provide its technical expertise for the on-site installation and commissioning.

GE Steam Power CEO Andreas Lusch said: “As Egypt works to diversify its energy production and support its growing economy, the El Dabaa nuclear power plant, equipped with GE Power’s Arabelle technology, will help Egypt deliver on their ambitious goals.

“Today, the Arabelle is helping to deliver more than 20GW of power around the world and we will leverage this experience and know-how to deliver reliable, dependable and CO2 free energy to the Egyptian grid.”

The demand for electricity in Egypt has been on the rise, and to meet this Egypt has developed an energy plan which will see a diversification of its installed base.
