HiTHIUM sets sights on world’s first eight-hour battery storage solution

HiTHIUM is pushing long-duration storage into new territory with the unveiling of its ∞Power8 6.9MW/55.2 megawatt-hour (MWh) system, introduced as the world’s first battery energy storage solution designed for eight-hour operation. The system is aimed at utilities, large renewable bases, and project developers seeking dependable all-weather output from wind and solar assets.

Unlike extended 2–4 hour platforms, ∞Power8 is framed as a turnkey eight-hour product designed from cell to system, with each standard unit delivering 6.9MW of power and 55.2MWh of energy via one medium-voltage module and eight energy storage modules. This configuration is aimed at stand-alone storage plants, hybrid wind-solar hubs, and sites exposed to more extreme environmental conditions, where predictability and long-duration dispatch are at a premium.

HiTHIUM’s positioning assumes lithium will remain the technology of choice for long-duration applications, arguing that dedicated eight-hour cells can better satisfy system-level needs for efficiency, integration and stability over multi-hour cycles. For grid operators managing higher renewable penetration, the company is offering the eight-hour long-duration energy storage as a tool to manage ramps, firm intermittent generation and raise asset utilisation without leaning on fossil peakers.

On the economics and operations side, the company says the new architecture trims redundant components to lift integration levels and improve overall system efficiency compared with its previous designs. It also highlights gains in constructability and deployment: optimised hoisting and cabling are intended to reduce land requirements and speed installation, while intelligent controls, thermal-island simulation and active balancing target lower auxiliary power use and higher round-trip efficiency.

The technical centrepiece is the ∞Cell 1300Ah 8h, a high-capacity lithium cell built with ultra-thick electrode technology to address long-duration challenges such as electrode cracking and ion transport. HiTHIUM indicates that the cell delivers several times the capacity of mainstream alternatives, reduces system component count and is designed for a service life exceeding 25 years, with mass production of the ∞Power8 platform scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
