NB Power has contracted PROENERGY to develop, construct, own and operate the Renewable Integration and Grid Security (RIGS) project in New Brunswick, Canada.

RIGS is a new 400MW peaking facility being developed by NB Power in collaboration with the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council (NSMTC).

The initiative will enhance energy security for residents amidst increasing electricity demand due to population growth in New Brunswick.

With the transition towards sustainable energy sources underway, NB Power faces challenges during periods of low wind or insufficient sunlight.

To combat this and avoid potential shortfalls forecasted for 2028, previously anticipated in the 2030s, the utility has taken proactive measures by launching the new generation facility.

PROENERGY president and CEO Jeff Canon stated: “Our team has a deep understanding of Eastern Canada. PROENERGY appreciates the trust placed in us by NB Power and the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council to provide the reliable fast-start power they need.”

RIGS will be equipped with dual-fuel combustion turbines and grid-stabilising synchronous condensers.

The facility will be sited on Route 940 in Midgic, Centre Village, on land owned by NB Power.

The chosen location minimises environmental impact due to existing transmission lines and fuel supply in its proximity.

The project will commence operations in 2028.

Operated by PROENERGY, the plant will supply electricity under a 25-year power purchase agreement with NB Power as the primary customer.

NB Power president, CEO and chief nuclear officer Lori Clark stated: “At NB Power, our commitment is to provide secure and sustainable energy for New Brunswickers. Launching this generation expansion project addresses the pressing need to enhance our grid’s reliability and security to meet the unprecedented growth in energy demand.

“Partnering to secure additional electricity and capacity through this project ensures we can confidently navigate the energy transition, providing New Brunswickers with the reliable electricity they need, when they need it most.”
