AboitizPower subsidiary Therma South has received an environmental compliance certificate (ECC) for the planned construction of a P25bn ($575.9m) coal-fired plant in Davao, the Philippines.

The ECC was secured from the environment management bureau (EMB) of the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Therma South also intends to secure other necessary permits and clearances for the project, which is expected to be built in 40 months.

The 300MW project will employ circulating fluidised bed technology to ensure reduction of sulphur emissions, and is also expected the lessen the island’s dependence on hydro power.
