US-based power giant AES Corp is one step further to doubling the capacity of its of 600MW Masinloc coal-fired facility in Zambales, the Philippines.

AES official Andrew Horrocks told reporters this week that the company was in the process of getting an environmental compliance certificate for the $1bn project.

The company also expects to receive other permits next month, reports the Business Inquirer.

In the first phase of the project AES Corp will construct a 300MW coal plant, which is expected to be complete by 2015, as it intends to double the existing capacity of the facility.

In the first second phase, the project will see the remaining 300MW going online by 2018.
