One of the reactors at the Tihange nuclear power station in the city of Liège, Belgium, has been automatically shutdown due to technical problems.

The power station is located on the right bank of the Meuse River at Tihange.

Tihange 1, which has a power generation capacity of 962MW, had to stop operations as a fault was detected in the water supply pump of a steam generator at the reactor.

The power plant will be offline for ten days, according to the facility operator Electrabel, which is a unit of French energy giant Engie.

"Electrabel stated that the incident had no effect on workers, locals, or the environment."

The faulty unit had recently resumed operations after maintenance work, which had been ongoing since June, reports Reuters.

Technical teams under the operator have been working at the power station since Friday in order to ensure safety and restart operations.

The second nuclear unit at Tihange nuclear power station, which has a capacity of 1,008MW, has also been shutdown for an indefinite period due to cracks in its core tank.

Tihange 3 is still operational and has a power generation capacity of 1,015MW.
