Sarawak Energy subsidiary SEB Power has contracted a joint venture (JV) of China Gezhouba Group Company and Untang Jaya to undertake civil works for the 1,285MW Baleh hydroelectric plant (HEP) in Malaysia.
The deal comprises construction of the dam, intake structure, spillway, and penstocks. It marks China Gezhouba Group Company’s entry into the Malaysian construction industry.

The dam will be situated on the Baleh river around 95km upstream from where it meets the Rejang River in Kapit. Construction is expected to begin in October next year and fully comissioned by 2025.
Sarawak Energy chairman Abdul Hamed Sepawi said: “We have very structured procurement policies and procedures (PPP), which are in line with international and industry best practices. This is to ensure that we work with the best in class contractors to deliver high-quality projects that meet our requirements.
“The signing of this contract is an avenue for sharing of expertise between China Gezhouba Group Company and our own local contractor Untang Jaya.
“At the same time, it is also line with Sarawak Energy’s aim to support the state’s initiatives to maximise local and Bumiputra content in our procurement and contracts.”

Untang Jaya SdnBhd holds a 30% stake in the JV, with China Gezhouba Group Company. It is a Sarawak-registered construction contractor from the Baleh/Kapit area.
