US-based Deepwater Wind has revealed plans to develop a 144MW offshore wind and energy storage project on the Massachusetts coast.

Called Revolution, the farm will feature a 40MWh battery storage system from Tesla.

The project was suggested in response to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ request for proposals (REP) for new sources of clean energy to promote energy diversity.

If approved, Revolution will be developed at Deepwater Wind’s federal lease site, which is located near the 90MW South Fork windfarm.

Construction of Revolution is scheduled to begin in 2022, with operations planned by 2023.

Deepwater Wind has also provided alternative bids for a larger 288MW or a smaller 96MW version of the project.

Grybowski added: “Revolution is flexible and scalable. That is a serious advantage of offshore wind; we can build to the exact size utilities need.

“We can build a larger project if other New England states want to participate now or we can start smaller to fit into the region’s near-term energy gaps. And our pricing at any size will be very competitive with the alternatives.”

The bids are set to be placed by December next year.
