A group of companies, including EDP Renováveis and ENGIE, has proposed a pilot floating wind farm in the Mediterranean.

Other members of the group are French financial organisation Caisse des Dépôts and French construction company Eiffage.

The proposal for the project has been submitted to ADEME, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency. To be located at the Leucate site in the Mediterranean, the proposed Les éoliennes flottantes du golfe du Lion facility will feature three to six wind turbines with a minimum capacity of 6MW each.

Turbines at Les éoliennes flottantes du golfe du Lion offshore wind farm will be joined with an integrated semi-submersible type floating foundation built by Eiffage Métal.

The companies plan to call for French companies to supply main components of the project’s pre-commercial facilities.

According to EDP, the floating turbine technology can be deployed in high winds areas and deep seas.

The Mediterranean coastal areas of France are said to support the development of such seaborne renewable energy.

With this call for tenders, France joins Japan, Norway, Portugal and the UK, which have already begun using this technology.

Projects selected as part of the ADEME tender will receive financial backing and also sign power purchase agreements, SeeNews Renewables reported.
