Through its Mexican renewable energy subsidiary Enel Green Power México (EGPM), Enel has commenced construction of the 238MW direct current (DC) Don José solar photovoltaic (PV) plant.

Around $220m will be invested in the construction of the new Don José solarpower facility, which is located in San Luis de la Paz in the North-Central state of Guanajuato, Mexico.

Enel's Central America renewable energies head Paolo Romanacci said: “Today’s announcement marks an important milestone for our presence in Mexico, as Don José is the final project to begin construction from the 1GW of capacity awarded to Enel in the country’s first long-term public tender following its energy reforms.

“This milestone further strengthens our leadership in the Mexican renewable energy sector, while confirming our commitment and ability to successfully contribute to the country’s growth in a sustainable and innovative way.”

Once operational, the plant will be able to generate 539GWh of renewable energy per year, which is equivalent to the annual electricity requirements of approximately 410,000 Mexican homes.

The solar plant will be supported by a contract with Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to sell both specified volumes of energy over a period of 15 years and the related clean certificates over a period of 20 years.

The Don José solar facility is expected to enter into operation next year.
