Italian electricity company Enel’s renewable subsidiary has completed and connected its 66MW Tom Burke photovoltaic (PV) power plant in South Africa’s Limpopo province.
The plant is capable of producing up to 122GWh per year and could cut CO2 emissions by 111,000t.

Enel’s South Africa country manager Lamberto Dai Pra said: "With the completion of Tom Burke, Enel takes its installed capacity in South Africa to nearly 160MW."
"Furthermore, we have more than a GW either recently awarded or already under construction, leveraging on the huge potential offered by this resource-rich country.
"The South African energy market is on the point of a very interesting evolution and we are developing an increasingly integrated presence in the country. We have coupled our strong renewable generation base with YouPower, a state of the art retail offering combining distributed generation, storage and digital energy services."
The total output is sufficient enough to meet the per annum power consumption requirements of approximately 38,000 South African houses.

By GlobalDataAs part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) tender, the new PV power plant is supported by a power supply agreement with the South African utility Eskom for a period of 20 years.
The tender has been promoted by the South African Government, which awarded the Tom Burke power plant project to Enel Group.
