India-based Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has secured a Rs7.6bn ($119m) contract from Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) to develop a fast reactor fuel cycle facility (FRFCF) at Kalpakkam in Chennai.
Under the contract, HCC will build nuclear safety compliant structures for fuel processing plants and provide civil, electrical, and mechanical work.

When the project is completed in 48 months, the FRFCF will serve as a fuel processing facility for fast breeder reactors, which produce more material for a nuclear fission reaction than they consume.
The facility represents a major component to India's three-stage nuclear power programme and will be designed to reprocess the prototype fast breeder reactor's (PFBR) used fuel. The PFBR is currently under construction at Kalpakkam.
Hindustan Construction Company president and E&C CEO Arun Karambelkar said: “With our experienced team, we are confident of delivering this job on time with precision in quality, safety, and state-of-the-art technology.”
So far, the company has received a total of four contracts from IGCAR.
