IBM has joined an EU-funded consortium which plans to develop a pilot smart energy grid project on the Danish island of Bornholm.

The EcoGrid EU project will use at least 50% of renewable energy sources, such as wind power, solar energy and bio gas.

Using smart meters and a Web-based app that runs on smartphones, tablets and PCs, consumers can plan when to purchase electricity online.

The pilot project, being developed by 16 partners in 16 countries, is expected to continue for the next 48 months.

EcoGrid EU is in support of the European Commission’s 20/20/20 plan.
