The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) is planning to commence construction of two new nuclear power plants in the southern-province of Bushehr, Iran, in the current Iranian year, which ends on 20 March 2015.

FARS News Agency cited AEOI spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi as saying: "We reached agreements in our (recent) talks with the Rosatom (the Russian contractor) chief on the construction of two power plants with a minimum capacity of 1,000MW and equipped with water sweetening systems beside Bushehr’s first nuclear power plant.

"The new facilities, which will have a capacity to produce at least 1,000MW of electricity each, will be developed next to the first unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant."

In March, AEOI and Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy signed the agreement, which is forms part of a 1992 deal between the two countries on further nuclear cooperation, to develop at least two more nuclear power plants in Bushehr, Kamalvandi said.

Under the terms of the accord, the new facilities, which will have a capacity to produce at least 1,000MW of electricity each, will be developed next to the first unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Additionally, the agreement includes the construction of two desalination units.

Kamalvand was quoted by Trend News Agency as saying: "The construction plan will be complete in five to seven years."

AEOI chief Ali Akbar Salehi said earlier this month that Iran is expected to sign a contract in the near future with Russia for the construction of two new nuclear power plants in Bushehr.

Salehi had then said: "At present the AEOI deputy chief is negotiating in Moscow and the contract between Iran and Russia for building new power plants will be inked before the meeting between Mr (Vladimir) Putin (the Russian president) and Mr (Hassan) Rouhani (the Iranian president), which will be held within the next one month."
