Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) has approved restart proposals for two more nuclear reactors at the Takahama nuclear power station (NPS).
Kansai Electric Power, the operator for the power station, still has to obtain approvals for design upgrades and undergo operational checks at the facility before it can start commercial operations.

Local authority approvals are also required for Takahama NPS Units 3 and 4, Reuters reported.
A Kansai Electric spokesperson was quoted by the news agency as saying that the company intends to restart the reactors by November.
The safety clearance is another step forward for the nuclear power industry in Japan, which came to a standstill after the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in March 2011.
All 48 nuclear reactors in the country were taken offline by September 2013.

Kyushu Electric Power’s Sendai nuclear power station in Kagoshima Prefecture was the first to receive regulatory approvals after the prolonged halt. Initial safety clearance for the restart of two reactors at the facility was granted in September 2014.
