Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated (TEPCO) has awarded a contract to a Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) led consortium for the design work of an integrated coal gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) system.

The large-scale IGCC system is scheduled to be used for a project aimed at creating the world’s most advanced coal-fired thermal power plants.

"The consortium will construct two 500MW class IGCC plants in the Fukushima Prefecture to help promote local industrial recovery."

Comprising Mitsubishi Heavy Industries(MHI), Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems (MHI-MS), the consortium will construct two 500MW class IGCC plants in the Fukushima Prefecture to help promote local industrial recovery.

The first IGCC plant would be constructed at TEPCO’s Hirono power station in Futaba-gun, while the second would be built at the Joban joint power-operated Nakoso power plant in Iwaki City.

Incorporating Japanese-built environmentally harmonic technologies, MHPS’ IGCC systems are efficient coal-fired power generation plants and generate power using a combined-cycle format, incorporating coal gasification and both gas and steam turbines.

"The introduction of IGCC technology has also enabled reductions in emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx)."

The plants deliver enhanced generation efficiency compared with conventional coal-fired power generation systems and significantly lower CO2 emissions, resulting in an innovative thermal power generation system.

The introduction of IGCC technology has also enabled reductions in emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx).

The MHPS-led consortium has already started work on preparing the equipment specifications, layout design and major system diagrams.

MHPS is primarily responsible for designing the gasification and combined-cycle power generation equipment, while MHI is in charge of gas refining equipment and Mitsubishi Electric will handle power generation and electrical equipment.

Meanwhile, the fourth partner, MHI-MS has been tasked with designing the wastewater treatment facilities.

In wake of their advantages in the dual terms of effective utilisation of resources and environmental protection, the IGCC systems’ demand is expected to grow in many countries such as Japan, which have scarce energy resources.
