US-based company NTE Energy affiliate NTE Carolinas II has been granted its final Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) from the North Carolina Utilities Commission for development of its 500MW Reidsville Energy Center.
NTE Carolinas required the CPCN approval to begin construction. Located in Rockingham County, the centre is a natural gas-fired electricity generating facility.

Once in operation, the power project will serve as a source of clean and efficient electric capacity for many communities and utilities in the Carolinas.
NTE Energy's chief executive officer (CEO) Seth Shortlidge said: “The issuance of the CPCN represents a major milestone for the facility.
“The Reidsville Energy Center is an essential project, providing economic and reliable wholesale power to the competitive power market in the Carolinas.”
Currently, NTE is in the study phase of interconnecting the natural gas-fired facility with Duke Energy Carolinas’ high-voltage transmission system, obtaining all required permits and approvals. While construction on the Reidsville gas-fired unit will commence in Q4 of this year, the facility is expected to begin commercial operation in 2021.

The new gas-fired facility will be comparable to the company’s 475MW natural gas electric generating facility, Kings Mountain Energy Center, which is currently under construction.
