Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) of Pakistan has approved a plan by Shanghai Electric Group to develop 1,400MW coal-fuelled power project in Thar.
The approval marks the PPIB’s second coal-based project permit in the Thar region, the first being for the 660MW Engro power project.

Thar coal resource exploitation is in line with the country’s initiatives to generate power in huge amounts using cheap local coal to meet its growing energy demands.
The facility is recognised among the priority projects in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It is likely to start commercial operations in 2017-2018.
Pakistan Water & Power Federal Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said that CPEC is considered as a game-changing initiative, which will drive Pakistan towards its economic development.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing has also been approved by the board between PPIB, China Three Gorges and Silk Road Fund for the private hydropower projects development in Pakistan.

By GlobalDataPPIB has also granted a permit for standardised tri-partite letter of support to a 150MW coal-based power project in Arifwala, 1,200MW coal-fired projects in Sahiwal, 1,320MW imported coal-fired projects at Port Qasim and 1,320MW imported coal-based projects in Hub, Balochistan.
