piwer generation station

Panda Power Funds has started construction on the 829MW Patriot combined-cycle natural-gas fuelled power plant in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, US.

The Patriot Generating Station is the company’s second power plant in Pennsylvania, after the Liberty power project.

Liberty is also an 829MW project in Towada and is 45% complete. A joint venture of Gemma Power Systems and The Lane Construction is the engineering-procurement-construction contractor for the project.

Siemens Energy will supply the power island package, including Siemens H-class natural gas turbines, steam turbines, generators and heat-recovery steam generators, as well as instrument and control systems.

"We are creating family-sustaining jobs and are reinvigorating local communities all over Pennsylvania."

Expected to begin commercial operations in mid-2016, the project would create up to 500 on-site jobs during construction.

Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett said: "This is another project that shows how our ‘all of the above and below’ energy strategy is putting Pennsylvania at the forefront of the American energy revolution.

"By responsibly harvesting our abundant energy resources, we are creating family-sustaining jobs and are reinvigorating local communities all over Pennsylvania."

A total of $5.85bn will be contributed by the project to the local economy during its construction and its first ten years of operation.

The Panda Patriot facility is expected to be one of the cleanest natural gas-fuelled power plants in the US.

Siemens H-class gas turbines’ plant operating efficiencies of 60% make the facility fuel-efficient. The plant will use air instead of water for cooling, therefore avoiding discharges into the Susquehanna River.

The power plant is located in the Marcellus Shale, one of the largest natural gas fields in the world, ensuring supply of up to 330 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas. It will be enough to meet the production demands of the facility for 100 years at current levels.
