US-based pharmaceutical firm Pfizer has unveiled a 5.6MW fuel cell power plant in its research and development facility in Groton, Connecticut.

FuelCell Energy has constructed the plant and delivered installation, operation, and maintenance in ten months. The project will provide clean and affordable power for its Connecticut campus.

Groton City's Mayor Marian Galbraith said: "We value Pfizer as a vibrant contributor to the local economy and further investments in their campus, such as this fuel cell power plant project, support their commitment to the region.

"It is exciting when two innovative Connecticut companies such as Pfizer and FuelCell Energy work together to solve business challenges in a manner that benefits the citizens of the state."

Pfizer will purchase power and heat generated by the ultra-clean fuel cells under a twenty year power purchase agreement (PPA) from a direct subsidiary of FuelCell Energy.
