German conglomerate Siemens has won contracts to upgrade the energy distribution grid of five cities in India, to improve the quality and availability of power for the residents.

The cities of Amritsar, Jallandhar, Ludhiana, Dehradun, and Faridabad in northern India will benefit from the modernisation scheme, which has been initiated by the three state utilities of Punjab State Power Corporation, Uttarakhand Power Corporation, and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam.

According to the terms of the €11m order, Siemens will be deploying its Spectrum Power network control system for the upgrades.

"We are strengthening and expanding our position as a leading supplier of grid automation technology worldwide."

The firm plans to equip the grid with supervisory control and data acquisition / distribution management system (SCADA/DMS) functions, to enable better monitoring and control.

Siemens Energy Management division CEO Jan Mrosik said: "Our SCADA/DMS systems are being successfully used by numerous energy suppliers and grid operators in India, where, among others, our systems reduce the downtimes in the event of blackouts in the grid.

"With the new orders from northern India, we are strengthening and expanding our position as a leading supplier of grid automation technology worldwide."

The modernisation scheme is presently underway at the five Indian cities, which when completed, will allow for real-time monitoring and control of the grids, minimise energy losses, enable load management, load shedding, and efficient handling of disruptions in the grid and its restoration.

Siemens has also signed a separate deal with the State Electricity Distribution Company, Mumbai, for equipping power distribution grids across eight Indian cities with turnkey monitoring and control systems.
