The Kenyan Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has signed a $2.2bn agreement with SkyPower for developing 1GW of solar power projects in the country.
Under the terms of the agreement, the solar energy projects will be developed in four phases over the next five years.

SkyPower president and chief executive officer Kerry Adler said: "Kenya has become an African hub for innovation and entrepreneurship.
"SkyPower’s solar projects will help Kenya realise its electrification goals, support the development of the country’s renewable energy industry and help the development of strong communities, generating a brighter future for all."
Kenyan Ministry of Energy and Petroleum cabinet secretary Henry Rotich said: "Sustainable electrification is a central policy issue in Kenya, and we are committed to making this a reality for our citizens, while accelerating economic growth in the process."
SkyPower executive vice-president Charles Cohen said: "SkyPower’s US $2.2bn investment will create more than 25,000 total job years in Kenya and includes 200MW of fabrication and assembly facilities, as well as a commitment of $173m toward education, training, and research and development."
