Developed with an investment of €1.2bn, the Sandbank windfarm will help reduce more than 700,000t of emissions annually.

Generated power will be transmitted to the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station SylWin alpha via an alternating current (AC) transmission link.

"It brings us a great step closer to our goal of 100% green electricity for Munich by 2025."

Vattenfall senior vice-president Gunnar Groebler said: “I think the start of Sandbank is a further proof to Vattenfall´s strategy of continuing to push the transformation of our production portfolio towards renewable energies.”

The Sandbank windfarm project was implemented by Sandbank Offshore, which is jointly owned by Vattenfall (51%) and Stadtwerke München (49%).
