US-based wind energy company Triangle Gallegos has won the bid for a wind farm project to be located on around 19,000 acres of State Trust Land and 31,000 acres of private land situated 35 miles west of Clayton in Union county.
To be built in two phases starting in 2015, the proposed farm project is expected to generate approximately 500MW of electricity through 285 wind turbines and would also reduce CO2 emissions by 1.3 million tonnes, while annually saving more than 550 million gallons of water.

Transmission facilities developer Lucky Corridor will provide the transmission service for the project.
Triangle Gallegos, a joint venture between Triangle Cattle and Gallegos Wind Farm, has agreed to lease payment terms that are estimated to generate revenue of $47m for State Trust Land beneficiaries over the project life, which spans 45 years.
Public schools, UNM, NMSU, the New Mexico Military Institute and the NM Behavioral Health Institute include the beneficiaries of the land that is being leased.
New Mexico State Land Commissioner Ray Powell said renewable energy leasing has become the largest growth area for its Commercial Resources Division.

The project will also create 400 total construction jobs and around 20 new, well paying permanent jobs.
