US-based WGL Energy Services has collaborated with Monumental Sports & Entertainment to sell energy from a new offsite, third-party-owned solar facility in Frederick County, Maryland.
The long-term arrangement will enable Verizon Centre to buy power from the Maryland solar facility through Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which will be bundled with national solar renewable energy credits. This power will enable the centre to operate using 25% of solar energy.

WGL's vice-president and chief revenue officer Dr Louis Hutchinson said: “Offsite renewable energy is one of the fastest-growing sectors within the energy industry.
“As renewable energy offerings continue to mature, it's exciting to see the sports industry play a major role in sourcing offsite renewable energy.”
By the end of this year, the Verizon Centre is expected to receive nearly 4.7 million kWh per year of energy from the 3.5MW solar project.
