Swedish renewables developer OX2 has secured Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) approval to build the 135MW Muswellbrook solar and storage project in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
The site is next to the Muswellbrook coal mine, which concluded operations in 2022, is primarily owned by mining company Idemitsu Australia.
The initiative is part of a plan to transform the old mining area into a centre for industrial progress and energy innovation. Developed in collaboration with Idemitsu, the project already has development approval.
OX2 Australia development director Catherine Way stated: “This is a leading example of the transition of the Upper Hunter Valley from coal mining to innovative post-mining land uses. The Muswellbrook solar project is an early mover in the re-purposing of a coal mine into an energy generation site and serves as an important test case for the broader region.”
This is the second project for OX2 in Australia to gain EPBC approval, with its Summerville solar and storage project approved in July 2025.
OX2 has a portfolio of 3.7GW worth of projects in Australia, dedicated to solar power, wind energy and various storage solutions currently either under development or in construction phases.
