Petrofac has completed BorWin3 offshore wind grid project for the German-Dutch transmission grid operator TenneT. The 900MW BorWin3 offshore wind grid connection in the German North Sea has started transmission of power.

Three-phase electric power generated by offshore windfarms is now converted into direct current (DC) by the project. It will then be transmitted to the German national grid located 160km away on the shore.

From that location, the project will supply clean electricity from the wind power to more than one million of the country’s households.

Petrofac Engineering and Construction chief operating officer George Salibi said: “We are delighted to have reached this key milestone with BorWin3 ready for action.

“The additional grid connection being put into operation is a significant contribution to the energy transition in Germany and a further demonstration of Petrofac’s expansion into adjacent sectors, including renewable energy.”

TenneT initially awarded the BorWin3 offshore grid connection project contract to Petrofac and Siemens in 2014.

The company was responsible for engineering, procurement, construction (EPC), as well as transportation and installation of the BorWin Gamma platform that was equipped with Siemens high voltage direct current (HVDC) station.

The HVDC station was designed to convert the alternating current (AC) generated by the wind turbines at the offshore wind farms to DC. The company installed the jacket foundation in May 2018, whilst the topside was integrated in October 2018.
