The Philippines Department of Energy (DOE) plans to introduce 1,471MW of new electricity capacity to the national grid by April 2026 through 22 power projects.

This move is part of government efforts, under Executive Order No. 110, to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply as the global oil market continues to face uncertainty.

The targeted projects are in the advanced stages of construction or undergoing final testing and commissioning.

These additions are expected to help meet growing electricity demand and reinforce supply margins in the near term.

The new capacity will come primarily from renewable energy sources: 12 solar projects will contribute approximately 1,284MW, while six hydroelectric plants will add 48.23MW.

Two biomass facilities are set to provide 38MW, complemented by a 13.56MW wind project and a 20MW Integrated Renewable Energy Storage System (IRESS).

These initiatives form a subset of the broader directive by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who in his fourth State of the Nation Address tasked the DOE with expediting 200 power plant projects over three years to increase national supply.

Till date, 24 power generation plants monitored by the DOE are already commercially operational, providing a total of about 1,178.642MW.

This includes three solar power plants that began operating this month and seven Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities with a combined 190MW capacity.

To avoid delays in bringing additional projects online, the DOE is working directly with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, the Energy Regulatory Commission, and the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines.

These agencies address requirements related to transmission, interconnection, inspection, registration and metering for new power generation assets.

The DOE will continue monitoring project developments and maintain coordination with stakeholders across the energy sector to ensure that upcoming capacity is delivered according to technical, safety and regulatory standards.
