RWE has received planning approval from the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) for its Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm in the North Sea.
The second expansion phase aims to contribute an additional 900MW of capacity.

Nordseecluster B is planned to begin commercial operations in early 2029.
Production of certain components is already underway. Foundation installation is scheduled for next year, followed by the installation of the 60 turbines in 2028.
Situated approximately 50km north of the German island of Juist and 46km north of the German island of Borkum, the Nordseecluster offshore wind project is being developed in two phases.
The initial phase, Nordseecluster A, currently under construction, will boast a total capacity of 660MW.
With all foundations in place, installation of the 44 wind turbines is set to begin this summer.
Nordseecluster A is scheduled to be fully operational and connected to the grid by the beginning of 2027.
Overall, the green electricity generated from the Nordseecluster wind farm will be sufficient to power more than 1,600,000 households.
The Nordseecluster is expected to generate about 6.5 TWh of electricity per year.
This output will substantially support industrial decarbonisation, especially for RWE’s industrial customers.
Among these customers is Amazon, which entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with RWE for 110MW from Nordseecluster B in February 2026.
The Nordseecluster, a joint venture (JV) between RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management, will have a combined capacity of 1.6GW once complete.
RWE holds a 51% stake in the Nordseecluster and will oversee its construction and operation throughout its lifecycle. The remaining 49% ownership lies with Norges Bank Investment Management.
RWE offshore wind chief technology officer Tobias Keitel said: “Now that the BSH has granted approval for Nordseecluster B, we can begin construction at sea next year. Our portfolio already includes six offshore wind farms located off the German coasts.
“With the Nordseecluster, we are continuing to drive forward the expansion of offshore wind energy. This is a positive development for both the energy transition in Germany and for RWE.”
