Wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) will supply 45 SG 4.5-145 wind turbines with flexible power rating for Canadian integrated energy company Suncor-owned Forty Mile wind power project in southern Alberta, Canada.

The order was signed in December 2019 with an agreed nominal capacity of 205MW. It also includes a maintenance agreement for 20 years.

Stretching across 50,000 acres of private land, the 400MW Suncor Forty Mile wind power project is being built in two phases and will have a total of 89 wind turbines.

The 45 wind turbines supplied by SGRE will be used for the first phase of the project.

Siemens Gamesa Canada head David Hickey said: “We are happy to strengthen our relationship with Suncor.

“The SG 4.5-145 turbines provide extremely cost-competitive and clean energy, bringing economic benefits to the local communities in Alberta.”

It is the third order with Suncor, reinforcing the partnership between the two companies.

Once operational in 2021, the clean energy generated by the facility will be sufficient to power more than 100,000 Alberta homes.

The energy generated by the wind facility will be supplied to the gird through the Granlea substation.

SGRE said that with the latest order, the total group of projects for the 45 SG 4.5-145 wind turbine model in Canada have reached 574 MW.

Last month, Dominion Energy selected SGRE as the preferred turbine supplier for its 2.64GW offshore wind project in Virginia, US.

Located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, the offshore wind project will be built on a 112,800-acre area and generate carbon-free electricity that will be sufficient to power 650,000 Virginia homes at rated wind speed.
