Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has secured an order to supply turbines for the 376MW Formosa 2 offshore windfarm project in Taiwan.

The conditional contract was awarded by consortium partners Macquarie Capital and Swancor Renewable Energy and includes a 20-year full-service agreement for the project.

Under the contract, SGRE will supply 47 SG8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines for the farm.

Siemens Gamesa Offshore for Asia-Pacific executive general manager Niels Steenberg said: “We are delighted to continue our close collaboration with Swancor and Macquarie in Taiwan, which started on Formosa 1, Taiwan’s very first offshore wind power project.

“Siemens Gamesa is committed to the success of those early developments, which will lay the foundations for a prosperous and sustainable offshore wind industry in the market.”

SGRE noted that a firm order is conditional on the consortium’s final investment decision.

In addition to the turbine supply and service agreement, the Spanish firm has agreed to provide spare parts and tools to ensure the power plant’s reliability and optimal performance.

Located in Miaoli County in western Taiwan, Formosa 2 is the first to be built out of the Taiwanese Government’s zonal development programme. Taiwan’s zonal development initiative was launched to promote a 5.5GW offshore wind build-out by 2025.

Construction works at the site are expected to begin by next year. Formosa 2 will be located close to the site of the Formosa 1 power plant, which will also feature 22 SGRE offshore wind turbines.
