SSE Renewables plans to repower the 45MW Lochay hydropower station in Perthshire, Scotland, with a £70m ($88.5) investment up to 2028.

The refurbishment will extend the operational life of the hydroelectric power station, originally commissioned in 1958, by at least 40 years.

Located in Killin, Lochay power station is a significant component of the Breadalbane hydroelectric power scheme, which delivers 170 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy annually.

The upgrade will involve replacing all main generation components with modern technology, enhancing hydropower generation output without increasing water volumes.

SSE Renewables will engage with stakeholders and the local community before construction begins in April 2025.

The repowering works are expected to support Scotland’s regional supply chain and create 80 construction roles at peak.

The project will be completed by 2028, coinciding with the station’s 70th anniversary.

SSE Renewables hydro director Robert Bryce stated: “The announcement of a £70m refurbishment programme for Lochay power station further cements hydro’s vital role in the path to achieving UK and Scottish net zero carbon emissions targets, whilst supporting the wider industry supply chain.

“As with many of our hydro stations, Lochay has been a key part of the energy landscape for generations and this latest chapter will ensure it remains so for decades to come.”

Voith Hydro has been appointed as lead mechanical and electrical contractor.

Global Infrastructure will handle enabling works, supporting local and UK-based subcontractors.

AJT Engineering of Aberdeen will design and install the automatic self-closing valve, with Jack Tighe assisting in penstock recoating.

Stantec, based in Edinburgh and Glasgow, is leading civil design aspects, while Konecranes Demag UK will modernise the 70-year-old station crane.

McDonald Scaffolding of Invergordon has been appointed as the scaffolding contractor.
