Dutch-German electricity transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT has tested ANYmal, the first offshore autonomous robot, on a converter platform in the North Sea.

Developed by Swiss firm ANYbotics, ANYmal is a four-legged mobile robot fitted with a customised sensor head.

The one-week pilot installation saw it successfully demonstrate the ability to autonomously perform a range of inspection tasks of the platform.

The robot and ANYbotics field team were put through intense safety training including helicopter escape and survival on sea scenarios prior to being fielded on the offshore mission.

During a guided tour of the platform, the team conducted a 3D-map of the environment and the offshore autonomous robot navigated the platform and processed inspection protocols.

"A total of 16 inspection points such as gauges, levers, oil- and water levels and various other visual and thermal measurements were carried out on the fully autonomous mission."

ANYbotics further explained that due to its autonomous navigation capabilities, ANYmal can perform routine inspection tasks to monitor machine operations, read out sensory equipment as well as ensure the security of the electricity supply.

Additionally, ANYmal can be remotely operated from an onshore control centre, enabling TenneT to receive real-time information through the robot’s on-board visual and thermal cameras, microphones and gas detection sensors.

Established in 2016 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich (Switzerland), ANYbotics has been providing robotic solutions with a new level of mobility and interaction capabilities.
