Oklo, alongside its subsidiary Atomic Alchemy, has been chosen for three reactor pilot projects under the US Department of Energy’s (DoE) newly launched Reactor Pilot Programme.

Oklo was selected for two projects while Atomic Alchemy secured one.

The initiative is set to demonstrate criticality in a minimum of three test reactors by July 2026, which is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence.

The Reactor Pilot Program is a federal effort to modernise nuclear energy development, with executive orders signed in May 2025 paving the way for streamlined licensing and demonstration processes.

Oklo Jacob DeWitte co-founder and CEO stated: “We’re proud to be selected by the DOE for these three projects. This shows that the DoE is ushering in a new era of building new nuclear in America by unleashing its unique capabilities to enable American nuclear innovators to build.

“The DOE is opening the door to the market so new ideas, new approaches and new designs can be built more quickly and efficiently. American innovation is one of our strategic advantages, and the DoE’s selection of a number of projects provides a sweeping injection of urgency to meet the moment and unleash American nuclear innovation.”

The selection of Oklo and its subsidiary is projected to expedite deployment timelines and provide operational insights crucial for commercial licensing and readiness.

This aligns with broader objectives to harness public-private partnerships in driving energy innovation and addressing national energy requirements effectively.

Holtec International recently secured $83m from the DoE as part of a conditional loan guarantee of up to $1.52bn. This funding is aimed at restarting the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan, which could become the first commercial nuclear reactor in the US to resume operations following decommissioning.
