Zuiderzeewind, a consortium comprising Van Oord and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has secured a conditional contract from WindparkFryslân for the construction of a large-scale nearshore windfarm in the Netherlands.

The conditional contract includes construction of the 380MW nearshore windfarm and the service operations for the facility for at least 16 years.

In August 2018, Van Oord and SGRE were named as preferred contractor for the project.

Van Oord will design, manufacture and install the wind farm’s foundations and cables, as well as provide the equipment to install the wind turbines.

“The conditional contract not only includes construction of the 380MW nearshore windfarm but also service operations for the facility for at least 16 years.”

SGRE will provide design and fabrication, as well as undertake commissioning of the wind turbines and the onshore substation at Breezanddijk on the Afsluitdijk.

With more than 382.7MW of power generation capacity, the windfarm is planned to feature Siemens Gamesa’s 89 wind turbines. Each SWT-DD-130 wind turbine has a capacity of 4.3MW and a rotor diameter of 130m.

Once operational, the wind farm is expected to account for more than 70% of Friesland province’s renewable energy target of 530MW by 2020.

The final investment decision for the wind facility is expected to take place during the third quarter of this year.

Construction works at the site are expected to commence this year, and the facility will become operational by 2021.
