Approximately 1.34 million tonnes of radioactive water will be released into the sea over the next 30 years.
The contract will help to transmit up to 6GW of clean electricity generated at German offshore wind farms.
As a part of the project, Wintershall DEA is building a CO₂ hub in Wilhelmshaven, Norway, for CO₂ to be collected and temporarily stored before being taken offshore.
The system will harness the power of tidal steams and ocean currents in the North Atlantic.
The facility will supply 300MWh of flexible capacity to the UK’s national grid.
The facility will deliver nearly 630GWh of green energy annually and is expected to come online in 2025.
The start of construction follows amendments to the construction contract agreed in August 2023.
The facility will have the capacity to power 75,000 South Australian homes for one hour.
